The Mother Archetype: Nurturing Your Inner Summer

Picture a sister in her full power. Arms deep in flour as they knead bread while comforting a crying child and mentally planning the week ahead. This is the Mother archetype in action. It is full, vibrant, magnificent and organised. The Mother represents way more than biological motherhood. It embodies that summer energy of creation, nurturing, and socialising that lives within every woman. According to Jane Hardwicke Collings’ Four Phase Feminine Way, the Mother phase spans from childbirth to menopause, marking the summer season of life. It’s the part of you that takes those wild dreams from your Maiden years and actually makes them happen. The Mother also shows up in your menstrual cycle during your follicular phase, when your oestrogen starts climbing, and you suddenly feel like you could organise your entire life in a weekend.

Understanding the Mother as a Life Season

In Jane Hardwicke Collings’ framework, the Mother season kicks off with childbirth and continues through to menopause. This can span over two decades or three, but really, it’s less about counting years and more about recognising its particular energy. The Mother’s superpower is taking all those beautiful ideas from your Maiden phase and actually bringing them to life. Remember when you were younger and had these amazing visions? The Mother shows up with a plan and the stamina to make it happen. I love watching people in this phase because they’re juggling what looks impossible and somehow making it work. Perhaps not perfectly, but with this incredible capacity for holding complexity. The Mother archetype isn’t just about having babies. It shows up when you’re building businesses, caring for ageing parents, mentoring colleagues, or nurturing any kind of growth.

Beyond Biological Motherhood

Think about those who just seem to have everything figured out. They remember your birthday, always have snacks when someone’s hungry, and can pull together solutions when everything’s falling apart. That’s Mother energy in action.

The Sacred Rite of Passage: Childbirth

If you’ve given birth, you know it’s not just about bringing a baby earthside. It’s like rebirthing a totally different person while somehow still being yourself. Jane Hardwicke Collings talks about how your birth experience shapes how you step into Mother energy, teaching you something fundamental about what your body can do and how you navigate the unknown. The moment you feel that shift from “I’m responsible for me” to “I’m responsible for something else, someone else” — that’s your initiation into Mother energy.

The Mother Within Your Menstrual Cycle

The Mother also shows up every menstrual cycle in your pre-ovulation phase when your oestrogen starts climbing. This is when you wake up wanting to tackle your to-do list instead of hitting the snooze button. If you track your fertility awareness, you’ve probably noticed this shift. Projects that felt overwhelming during your period suddenly seem manageable. You’re saying yes to social plans and generally feeling like a functional human.

Peak Communication and Patience

This is also when you become the person everyone wants to talk to. You’re patient with annoying coworkers, can explain complicated stuff without getting frustrated, and somehow have the perfect words for every situation. The creativity during this time isn’t the dreamy “what if” creativity of your period. It’s the “okay, how do we actually make this happen” kind.

Working With Your Inner Mother

Whether you’re in your Mother life season or accessing this energy within your cycle, there are specific ways to honour and cultivate these qualities.

Create Sustainable Systems

The Mother archetype loves systems that support growth and efficiency. It’s the queen of creating structures that serve life rather than restricting it. It might mean setting up morning routines that energise rather than stress you, creating organisational systems that actually work for your brain, or establishing boundaries that protect your energy for what matters most. This is perfect timing for tackling organisational projects, setting up new systems, or restructuring existing ones that aren’t serving you.

Practice Nurturing Leadership

The Mother leads through inspiration and support rather than domination and control. She creates environments where others can flourish. Practice this kind of leadership in your work, your relationships, and your community involvement. This might look like mentoring someone, creating inclusive spaces, or taking on projects that serve the greater good, even when there’s no immediate personal benefit.

Honour Your Protective Instincts

The Mother has fierce protective instincts for their children, values, community, and their own well-being. In our culture, we are often taught to ignore these instincts or to feel guilty about them. The Mother says: trust what your gut tells you about people and situations. If something doesn’t feel right, pay attention. If someone or something is draining your energy without giving back, it’s okay to create boundaries. The Mother understands that protection and nurturing often go hand in hand.

Celebrate Your Multitasking Superpowers

While constant multitasking can be exhausting, the Mother archetype’s ability to hold multiple priorities simultaneously is actually a superpower. During cycle phases when Mother energy is strong, lean into this capacity. This is when you can tackle those projects that require juggling multiple components or when you can handle several conversations or meetings in a day without feeling overwhelmed.

Practical Mother Practices

  • Weekly Planning Sessions: Use your Mother energy to look ahead and create structures that support your priorities.
  • Batch Similar Tasks: Group similar activities together to maximise efficiency. The Mother loves this kind of practical organisation.
  • Create Nurturing Environments: Whether it’s your workspace, your home, or community spaces, the Mother naturally wants to make places that support growth and well-being.
  • Practice Practical Self-Care: Focus on self-care that actually sustains you rather than just feeling good in the moment.
  • Sacred Creation Time: During your follicular phase, dedicate time to cycle rituals that honour your creative and nurturing power.
  • Mentorship and Teaching: Share your skills and knowledge with others. The Mother finds deep fulfilment in supporting others’ growth.

Balancing Mother Energy

Here’s the thing about Mother energy: it’s incredible, but it can completely take over if you’re not careful. Too much Mother without balance leads to that “running on empty but can’t stop” feeling that so many of us know too well. Signs you might be overdoing it? You feel responsible for everyone’s happiness, saying no feels impossible, you’re exhausted from constantly giving, and you feel guilty prioritising your own needs. The trick is learning to flow between different energies. Your feminine energy naturally wants to cycle. It’s sometimes nurturing, sometimes receiving care, sometimes resting. When you’re menstruating, give yourself permission to shift into Maiden energy and let someone else do the caregiving. During your pre-menstrual phase, channel your inner Crone and get discerning about what actually deserves your energy.

Healing Mother Wounds

Not all of us had great examples of healthy Mother energy growing up. Maybe your mother burnt herself out or struggled to nurture in healthy ways. Such a situation can make stepping into your own Mother energy feel conflicting and challenging. Common wounds include:

  • being terrified of being overwhelmed by others’ needs
  • feeling guilty when you prioritise yourself
  • experiencing that bone-deep exhaustion from giving more than you receive

Here’s what I wish someone had told me earlier: healthy nurturing includes nurturing yourself. The Mother who burns herself out isn’t modelling balanced Mother energy; they’re overcommitting and spreading themselves too thin.  Healing often involves learning to set boundaries, asking for help, and understanding that self-care isn’t selfish.

Integrating Mother Wisdom

The goal isn’t to live in Mother energy 24/7 (that would be exhausting), but to integrate this wisdom as you move through each phase. Understanding your cycle can support recognising when Mother energy wants to show up. The Mother teaches us that creating and nurturing life is both ordinary and sacred. Whether you’re raising kids, growing vegetables, building businesses, or caring for your community, you’re participating in the life force that keeps everything going. Strength and tenderness aren’t opposites; they’re best of friends. Productivity and nurturing can work together. The work of caring for life is never small, even when it feels invisible.
